Day 40 -- The Blog has a new home!

Good evening blog readers! I'm super late to posting today but the streak continues! When I started posting daily in April I had no intentions or expectations to hit 40 days but it honestly would feel weird to stop now. So, we move 😤

And by move, I mean it's time to move to a new blog platform! Blogger has done me no wrong but I was convinced rather easily by a new friend I met today to try out Substack. The way the site is set up allows for multiple people to have their own pages as extensions from the main one (I think). So, I'm trying to make a Team Tahoe page in which my teammates and I can all share our individual stuff as well as team stuff. Even though it might not look like it, I spent several hours customizing and learning how to use my new home -- it was actually quite fun. Right now I have it organized for the whole team but no one has officially joined me yet... either way, I think using Substack will take the blogs to the next level 😎

Please check out the site and subscribe to be updated on every post! You can also download the app: https://substack.com/app

Blogger, I hope you understand. It's not you, it's me 💔

Day 39 -- My final college class ever!(?)

Well, I'm done with my college classes... maybe forever. Yesterday I provided my final contribution as a UMD student; I presented a few slides for my group's final project and was in charge of the slide clicker 😎 Then, after listening to 5 other groups present on basically the same exact topic, my LAST last day of class was complete.

I don't really feel much different right now. Honestly, I feel kinda confused because my schedule is now so free. I have no assignments to complete and only two exams to study for next week. The good news is that I have plenty of stuff to fill this time with! I'll be researching/emailing/calling potential hosts and mission projects for the Summer, figuring out what I'm doing after we finish in August, relaxing and hanging with friends, and I really need to get some more miles on the bike 😅

I want to give a huge thank you to all of you who have been a part of my life as a student. I'm extremely humbled by and gracious for the experiences that have all led me to this moment. It's so crazy to think about all the decisions we make and the results that follow... who knows how different my life would be if I didn't come to UMD. Or what if I never joined the Red Cross Club and thus never saw that GroupMe message to join 4K? I don't know if can put into words how thankful I am that all these little moments have lined up perfectly but maybe I'll figure it out someday. For now, I'll just appreciate the complexity of it all and do my best to enjoy the life I get to live.

So, without further ado, I have ~18 miles calling my name and a bike fit with Proteus after!!

p.s. thanks to everyone who reached out about potential hosts! I'll keep y'all updated on that stuff :)

Happily,

Hayden

This now significant photo was taken after donating blood for the first time on Sept. 23rd, 2021. I was so proud and happy because I realized how easily I could help someone else! I've since donated 5-6 times and as you all know have extended my giving efforts much more. Just keep giving <3

Day 38 -- Asking for your help again

Hey gang! I already made a post about this a couple days ago, but since I don't have an idea of what to write about today, I thought I'd reshare this. Thank you in advance for any & all help!

Team Tahoe is still looking for hosts in a bunch of places out West. Please check out the list below to see if you know anywhere we might be able to stay!

We still need a place to rest our weary heads in these cities:

We're also looking for a great place to stay in Baltimore during orientation (late May/early June) and somewhere around Frederick, MD on day 1 (June 4th)

Please reach out to me on instagramfacebook, or email (haydenkwilliam@gmail.com) if you have connections in any of these cities. Thank you :)

Day 37 -- Come with me to San Fran! (You don't have to run or bike)

Howdy y'all!

Today, I want to share the opportunity for someone to come aboard the 4K team for an all-expenses-paid Summer road trip! We're hoping to bring someone on as a full-time driver to reduce the logistical challenges that we're currently presented with as a relatively small team. All you gotta do is drive and we'll take care of the cycling. Ideally, you would collect and share content to keep donors and followers engaged and excited along the way as well. The position will be unpaid but like I said, free road trip!!

If you're 21 or over and want to be part of something special, please reach out to me via email: haydenkwilliam@gmail.com

Disclaimer: I modified this graphic... it is not an official Ulman ad

A couple updates from me: I got an A on that paper I was struggling through! I take my last lab practical for exercise physiology in 5 hours and my group should be submitting our last assignment later today :) I'm getting kinda nervous thinking about all the free time I'll have! Also getting nervous about this Summer... especially since my training has been relatively nonexistent for the past couple of weeks ðŸ˜¬

Ain't nothin to it but to do it!

p.s. if you didn't see my instagram/facebook post last night, I ate 6 cans of beans. It wasn't great but I'll still be eating beans today so I reckon it could've been worse :)

Day 36 -- Mistakes have been made

Happy Monday!! I have just three days of class left 😳

Last night I added $220 of cash/venmo from my Proteus fundraiser and March madness bracket (whoops... little late) to my fundraising page. That extra $220 brings our total to nearly $5,600! And if you remember, that means today is BEAN DAY!  I love beans and usually eat at least 1-2 cups every day so even though it's a little strange, I didn't think this would be too bad when I first proposed the incentive. However, I've already had one can of beans (red kidney) for breakfast and it was honestly not very enjoyable. I just went in for some pinto beans, and man, they were pretty bad 😂

I've gotten pretty creative in the kitchen recently and love to make cool new dishes (last night I made some fantastic oven-roasted brussel sprouts), but many of my meals are still very simple: sometimes just beans, rice, and some spices... sometimes just beans and spices! But I never realized just how crucial the other flavors were. I'm committed now though, so no turning back. The last thing I need is to skimp out on calories but I'm not sure how many cans I can endure (at roughly 300-400 calories per can, I'd need to eat 6 just to make it to 2,000 calories) so today might end up being a bit of a fast as well lol. Should've done another banana day ðŸ˜ž

In other news, before writing this I finished another final paper! Gonna go back and proofread it after I post this and submit it. That'll leave me with one more paper/project and a lab practical tomorrow and then I just have to get through finals :)

Show your support and have a can of beans with me today

Day 35 -- Thought I gave up didn't ya?

Happy Sunday evening everyone! Usually, I write my blogs in the morning but as you can see, it is not the morning. I crashed early after a fantastic Bluezapalooza last night (more about this at the end) and basically woke up, ate breakfast, and drove back to College Park (I'm just realizing right now that I don't have the typical anxiety I spoke about last time I came back from being home... cool). Then I scurried off to my last stream clean-up with my club, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance :')

After doing some laundry and more or less putzing around, here I am. I still haven't quite gotten back to a good sleep schedule so I'm hopeful to iron that out tonight. Before I say goodnight, however, I'm gonna knock out some reading and writing ahead of my final week of classes (😱). Some days I think for sure that I'll never return to school for a Master's or Doctoral degree but who knows what the future holds! One thing is for certain though: I'll be out of school for a minimum of a year, probably more. I listened to this podcast with Kevin Kelly today; the first 45ish minutes were fantastically inspiring for me as a young person unsure of what to do next. Essentially, Kevin is a huge advocate for zigging when everyone else is zagging (and telling you to do the same).

While I may not return to traditional higher education, I think the experiences I'll have outside of the classroom will be highly educational and worth much more than another diploma. Don't get me wrong, college has inarguably changed my life for the better but now it's time to try something different for a little while. Just 28 days until the first 'something new' starts! After 4K, I might have to do something even more off the wall than cycling across the country. Or maybe I'll settle down for a bit. I really don't know! And I'm happy about that :)

It's so funny how our brains work. When I opened up this page, I had several ideas of what I wanted to write about and yet I immediately went down a totally different path.

The first thing I wanted to talk about was Bluezapalooza. Man! It was so amazing. There were hundreds of people! The music was great, people were happy, and Blue gave an amazing speech AND crushed a surprise performance of "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)". To conclude his speech, Blue dropped some serious wisdom about perspective. He advised us to think about the events of each day in three parts: (1) the negative, crappy parts, (2) the mundane, boring parts that you don't really think about much, and (3) the successes and positive parts. He went on to explain that sometimes (oftentimes) we have no control over how our days go... sometimes they're all 3's, sometimes all 1's, sometimes a mix of all three, etc. But, what we do have control over is our perspective. And really, that's the only thing that matters. Blue told us to appreciate the crap and the mundane for what they truly are and remember that they're just a natural part of our success. When life seems as bad as it can get, smile and take what you can get from it. And when you find success, enjoy it for it truly is, be in the moment, and soak up all the love and fun while it's there. This explanation is of course paraphrased and not nearly as articulate as Blue's but his words last night went straight to my heart and will never leave. Blue, if you happen to read this, thank you. You and your family are special people. Never stop. Love ya ðŸ’™

Day 34 -- Bluezapalooza!

Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday night's alright!

Happy Saturday morning everyone. I'm back home in Easton again for the final time before I'm a 2x college graduate! (For those who don't know, I got an associate's degree in 2020). Today/tonight should be pretty special -- it's Bluezapalooza! My former high school soccer coach, Matt Blue, was diagnosed with colon cancer late last year and he's been nothing short of a beast in his fight. Bluezapalooza is a fundraising event/festival to support the Blue family; there's gonna be tons of people enjoying each other's company, music, food, and drinks! Should be a really good time.

Coach Blue had a significant impact on me as a young man; he taught me a lot about soccer and even more about life. I hope I can have a similar effect on one or two people in my life.
