Hi everyone, thanks for clicking on this post! Below you can read an update about my fundraising, training, and exciting news concerning the Ulman Foundation and 4K For Cancer. I've also included a little bit about myself if you're interested.
Update
First of all, thanks to ya'll who have shared and/or donated, we're now at $675! That's almost 15% of my $5000 goal for next May. I really appreciate all the support so far, please keep it up :) Also, I forgot to mention that at $1500 raised, the foundation sends me a bicycle - I'm not sure exactly what kind of bike it will be, but it will surely be a huge upgrade for me. It'd be awesome to reach that milestone asap so I can selfishly reap the benefits of a new bike.
About a week ago I reached out to the people behind the scenes of 4K For Cancer about interning with them this semester. I needed one more credit to maintain my transfer scholarship and my advisor, Dr. Brown, suggested I get an internship to round out my schedule and that I should try to collaborate with Ulman; I reached out and was happy to hear they wanted to bring me on! Together we decided I would be a great fit as a 'Mission & Engagement Coordinator'. With this leadership position I'll be taking on added responsibilities like service event planning, team bonding and fundraising, and obtaining dedication stories. Each day of riding or running is dedicated to a young adult with cancer or their family who has decided to share their story with us. It will be my job to seek out these stories and read a new one to the team each morning; we do this within a "dedication circle" where we can share and discuss the story's impact, dedicate that day's ride to them, and use it as fuel to keep going. I'm really excited to meet some amazing people and share their stories to help create a better world. The last duty I'll have as an intern is campus outreach; while I spread the message to raise funds, I'll also be promoting the opportunity to join me on the ride, which I think will be super cool. So, if you're curious to learn more about what your Summer could look like as a 4k'er, please leave a comment or message me directly on Instagram or Facebook! Also, check out my instagram to follow along as I challenge myself to ride around 500 miles over the next 6 days. Ok! I think that's all I have for now.
Short Bio
I wanted to include a much more abbreviated version of my long-form biography for anyone interested in getting the gist of my existence without all the extra jibber jabber. If you enjoy jibber jabber, go ahead and check out the other post and I'm certain your jabs will be jibbed. For those of you who prefer your jabs without the jibbing, you're in the right place. Ok, that's enough of that, from now on I'm keeping it super simple.
For anyone unaware, my name is Hayden Kessinger. I was born and raised in Easton, Maryland and next Spring I will be graduating from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology. I'm a dedicated student of life and love to learn about all kinds of things; I have trouble narrowing my focus, but right now I'm most interested in nutrition, exercise, sustainability, education, psychology, and spirituality. Within these various disciplines, I am expressly curious about the relationship between each and their influence on overall wellbeing and longevity as well as how we can culminate the optimal health/happiness cocktail using all of them. I enjoy being outdoors and love to discover the beauty of the natural world around me. I also love to stay active, especially through outdoor activities like cycling, hiking, sports, or even just walking. Equally important to me is spending quality time with others. I love having time to myself, but I get so much energy, joy, and knowledge from meaningful conversation with friends, family, and even strangers, I can't imagine life without it. I'm beyond excited to travel the country next Summer and hope to do tons more cool stuff just like this in the future.
Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to read this. If you want to dive deeper, I invite you to read my other most recent post.
Happily,
Hayden
